Thursday's Thought and Friday's Footnote

Matthew 24:35

Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

Good morning, one and all!
It's a blessing to me to write this blog and share it with whoever chooses to read it. I am once again bringing you two servings of tonic in one, all because my schedule seems so sporadic these past few days.
I found this short poem in a book yesterday (The Speaker's Quotebook by Benjamin R. DeJong), and I thought I'd share it with you:
When You Read the Bible Through
I supposed I knew my Bible,
Reading piecemeal, hit or miss,
Now a bit of John or Matthew,
Now a snatch of Genesis,
Certain chapter of Isaiah,
Certain Psalms (the twenty-third),
Twelfth of Romans, First of Proverbs --
Yes, I thought I knew the Word!
But I found that thorough reading
Was a different thing to do,
And the way was unfamiliar
When I read the Bible through.
You who like to play at Bible,
Dip and dabble, here and there,
Just before you kneel, aweary,
And yawn through a hurried prayer;
You who treat the Crown of Writings
As  you treat no other book --
Just a paragraph disjointed,
Just a crude impatient look --
Try a worthier procedure,
Try a broad and steady view;
You will kneel in very rapture
When you read the Bible through.
--Amos R. Wells

For several years, I read my Bible from Genesis through Revelation; then I skipped a few years, but I'm back again this year. This poem is so true - one can find so much more in the Bible - when we read it through!!
God bless your Friday and, if He's willing, I'll be back with more tonic soon!
