Proverbs 27:17
Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.
Good morning, family and friends!
It is the beginning of a new day; Terrific Tuesday, as I often say and write. How blessed we are to be alive, awake, and active!
Yesterday, I spent time in the company of two fairly new friends (a mother and daughter, also doing evangelistic work. I will withhold their names for privacy reasons.) After hearing the mother play the organ on Sunday, I asked if she had time to share with me some things about that instrument. She was willing to sit with me and share her knowledge ever so humbly and sweetly. I listened and learned; amazed at all she had to offer me in the way of music. More than that, though, I learned from her beautiful, godly spirit. As the verse in Proverbs 27 declares,"Iron sharpeneth iron..." I felt sharpened yesterday after being in her presence.
Some time after we had been in our learning session, the daughter came in and, what the mother did not know in musical terms, the daughter did, so she, too, imparted a wealth of knowledge to me yesterday. They both play well; they both sing beautifully. I felt honored and humbled that they would take the time to show me things on both the organ and the piano regarding chords, etc.
In a short time, the pastor's wife and another lady from the local church joined us and, soon it became an impromptu yet beautiful gathering of ladies who love God, music, and singing. We began to share songs. The mother and daughter played and sang songs they had written, and we recorded them on our phones. Time seemed to stand still as we enjoyed the beauty of God's wonderful gifts of song, music, and friendship.
We are truly helped or hindered by those we "hang around." Bad people often become worse because of the rough company they keep. But, we that love the Lord can add to one another each time we are blessed to have fellowship. It is a wonderful gift of God to have friends who impart what they have learned, so that we can become smarter and wiser.
I don't really have a song to share today. I suppose today's post is just a sharing of my gratitude to have been around really "sharp" people yesterday; treasuring the improvement I gained through the fellowship and love of God's people.
Matthew Henry's commentary on Proverbs 27:17 reads like this:
- "To direct us what we must have in our eye in conversation, namely to improve both others and ourselves, not to pass away time or banter one another, but to provoke one another to love and to good works and so to make one another wiser and better."
God bless you all today, and I pray we all continue to find people to sharpen and improve us; may we also willingly and lovingly impart to others what God has given to us.
Until tomorrow when, Lord willing, we'll share another spoonful........
