Luke 7:37-38
37 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,
38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.
Good morning, and a Special Sunday to you all!
It is Sunday, the most special day of the week. We are up and about, getting things together so we can attend church soon. We are blessed to see another day, one that the Lord has made, so we should rejoice and be glad!
I love the story in the seventh chapter of Luke, about the woman who brought an alabaster box of ointment and poured it on the feet of Jesus. So great was her love for Him that, even though she was an uninvited guest, she was compelled to see Him and show Him how very much He meant to her. She did not seek His face, nor touch His garments but rather came behind him and lowered herself in humility.
Simon, the Pharisee who had invited Jesus, had not shown that type of love for Jesus. Perhaps Simon only wanted Jesus to come to His house for selfish reasons, as it seems clear by what we glean from these scriptures that he never showed Jesus any type of special attention. But, this sinful woman, brought the best she had, and she wept in the presence of Jesus, then washed his feet with her tears. She wiped His feet with her hair, and kissed His feet.
Those who have been forgiven much, love much, as Jesus pointed out to Simon in the short story he told at the table that day. The woman, whoever she was, had been forgiven of many sins and her love was great for Jesus. Simon, on the other hand, gave minimal love to Jesus, indicating he had been forgiven of little.
As we go into the house of the Lord today, may this Bible story be fresh on our minds, as well as the words to one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.... The Alabaster Box, written by Janice Sjostrand:
Verse One
The room grew still as she made her way to Jesus
She stumbled through the tears that made her blind
She felt such pain, some spoke in anger,
Heard folks whisper, "There's no place here for her kind."
Still on she came through the shame that flushed her face
'Til at last she knelt before His feet
Though she spoke no words, everything she said was heard
As she poured her love for the Master
From her box of alabaster
Chorus
And I've come to pour my praise on Him
Like oil from Mary's alabaster box
Don't be angry if I wash His feet with my tears
And dry them with my hair
You weren't there the night He found me
You did not feel what I felt when He wrapped His loving arms around me
You don't know the cost of the oil in my alabaster box
Verse Two
I can't forget the way life used to be
I was a prisoner to the sin that had me bound
I spent my days, poured my life without measure
Into a little treasure box I thought I found
Until the day when Jesus came to me
And healed my soul with the wonder of His touch
And now I'm giving back to Him all the praise He's worthy of
I've been forgiven, and that's why I love Him so much
The Lord Jesus deserves the kind of praise and love as shown by the woman in our Bible story today. May we shed tears of joy and gratefulness because our sins have been forgiven as we kneel before Him and pour our praise on Him today!
A very Special Sunday to all of you today!
Until tomorrow, Lord willing...............
