Proverbs 17:17
A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
Good morning, and a Marvelous Monday may it be!!
I hope your Sunday was blessed as mine was, and thanks for joining me on Day 17, Chapter 17 as we continue with Perusing the Proverbs. Today, I'd like to comment on a verse-by-verse order.
- It would be much better to sit down to a meal of dry toast or croutons where there is quietness than to dine on lots of food where there is strife.
- A servant who is wise will rule over the shameful son, and he'll receive part of the inheritance as if he were a family member.
- This verse seems to be self-explanatory. There is a place where silver is refined (called a crucible), and there is a furnace where gold is refined. But, the Lord is the one who tests our hearts. And, we need to remember that the Lord does not test us to hurt us but to make us better, just like the crucible and furnace are places where the silver and gold become pure.
- Those who do wicked deeds take heed to false talk, and the liar listens to the naughty tongue.
- Whoever mocks the poor reproaches God, our Maker; and, those who love trouble will be punished.
- Grandchildren are truly the crown of old men. I'm a witness to that! Children take pride in their fathers, too. (I agree!)
- Fools do not speak with excellence, and princes don't look good with lying lips.
- A gift, or bribe as it is referred to in some translations, is precious to the one who has it and every way it turns, it prospers.
- Those who look beyond the faults of others do it in love, but those who repeat something they've heard separate "very friends."
- A wise man takes reproof to heart a lot better than beating a fool with one hundred stripes will affect him.
- An evil man seeks only rebellion, so a cruel messenger will be sent against him.
- It would be better to meet a Mama Bear whose cubs have been taken from her than to meet a foolish person. (What a word picture!!!)
- If we repay evil for good, we will have evil in our house the rest of our days.
- The beginning of strife is as one letting out water so leave contention as soon as possible.
- Thus far in studying Proverbs, we've learned that some things are an abomination to the Lord, and this verse tells us that God despises those who justify the wicked, and condemn the just.
- Why should a fool have money to buy wisdom, when he really doesn't want it?
- I memorized the first part of this verse when I was a young child in Sunday School. A friend truly does love at all times, and a brother will show his full colors during adversity (or misfortune).
- A man who lacks understanding will make a pledge in front of his neighbor.
- The lover of transgression also loves strife. Those who exalt themselves will be abased.
- Those who have a contrary heart find no good, and the wicked tongue falls to mischief.
- To have a foolish child brings no joy.
- A cheerful heart is like medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones.
- A wicked man takes a bribe in secret to destroy good judgment.
- Wise people look toward understanding while a fool looks toward the ends of the earth.
- A foolish son makes a father sad and a mother bitter.
- The ESV translation reads: "To impose a fine on a righteous man is not good, nor to strike the noble for their uprightness."
- Wise people choose their words, and a person who has understanding is of an excellent spirit.
- Even when a foolish person is quiet, he can be referred to as wise. To keep one's mouth closed at the right time is a sign of understanding.
May your Monday be Marvelous, and it will be when we remember our Maker!! God bless you, one and all, and I hope to see you again tomorrow!!
