Proverbs 9:10

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

Good morning, one and all, on this Special Sunday morning!

Thanks for meeting once more as we continue Perusing the Proverbs, with our focus today on Chapter 9. It feels as if we're on a search and find mission, looking for clues along the way that will lead us to great treasure. No other book but the Bible offers priceless jewels that will never be stolen from us nor diminish in value.

Wisdom has built a great house. She has gone all out in the preparation of a great feast, and she invites everyone to come! She sends out her maidens to invite people. Come to my table. I have a feast prepared for you. Eat with me. Dine with me. All who feast with wisdom will gain much; they will definitely leave her table different than the way they sat down.

There is a short lesson on reproving someone. If we try to scold someone gently and he's a scorner or a wicked one, we will be mocked in return. But, when we admonish a wise man, he will appreciate the reproof and will grow from it.

When we fear the Lord, or stand in awe of Him, we embark on a great journey toward gaining wisdom. The fear of the Lord is the first step on this wise road filled with understanding. Knowledge is having the facts but wisdom is knowing how to use the facts in a sensible way. To have the facts about holiness is great, but to have wisdom in applying those facts to our lives is greater. Wisdom adds to a person's life, multiplying the days and years.

The rest of the chapter describes the foolish woman who is clamorous. To be clamorous means to be constantly complaining or demanding; to be loud. On top of being loud, she knows nothing. Her cry is a far cry from that of wisdom. Wisdom built a strong house, and prepared her own meal, then invited all to come. The foolish woman has prepared nothing and her words are seductive and flattering - "Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant." (verse 17) Those who go into her house, die.
