Proverbs 13:4

The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.

Welcome to Day 13, Chapter 13 of Perusing the Proverbs. I trust that our reading and studying today will be of great benefit. Again, it feels like we're on a treasure hunt with invaluable riches awaiting us.

A wise son hears his father but a scorner turns away from instruction.

Another word picture is found in verse 2. If are words are good, we will eat good fruit, but the meal of the transgressor is a plate full of violence.

A guard upon our mouths will keep us while the foolish babbling one will be destroyed.

The lazy want something good but they never receive it, but the soul of the hard-working man will be made fat.

The righteous despise falsehood. The wicked are disgusting, and their end is shame.

To stay put in an ever-changing world, we need to be upright. A man's wicked ways will overthrow him.

To live in a showy fashion can really be an empty life, while the person who lives a simple life can be truly rich.

The riches of the wealthy can be taken away but the poor never suffer threats.

The light of the righteous (isn't Jesus our light??) rejoices. God's Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. If one lives wickedly, their light will be put out.

Pride causes contention, but the well-advised are wise.

Riches gained in the wrong way will slowly fade away, but a person who labors will find increase.

"Hope deferred", or hope held off for a time, makes the heart sick. But, when the answer comes, it is a "tree of life". Prayers that aren't answered right away often leave us discouraged, but one day the answer WILL come, and we'll be glad!

Never despise God's Word for to fear it brings reward. All those who despise the commandments of God are headed for destruction.

Wise people possess life - a fountain of it, and it will keep them from the snares of death.

It is a favorable thing to have understanding, but the life of a transgressor is hard.

The prudent, or wise, handle affairs with knowledge while the fool lets everybody know how foolish he really is.

The wicked "mail carrier" will fall into trouble but the one who is faithful brings a message of health. His message builds up or edifies.

To refuse instruction will result in poverty and shame, but those who regard reproof will find honor.

What does it feel like to accomplish something? It is sweet to the soul. Fools, on the other hand, cannot depart from evil.

We are known by the company we keep. Walk with the wise and find wisdom. Be a friend to a fool, and find destruction.

Evil will eventually find the sinners but the righteous will be repaid with good.

Good men leave something for their grandchildren, but the inheritance of the wicked will go to someone else.

In the NASB version, verse 23 reads like this: "Abundant food is in the fallow ground of the poor, but it is swept away by injustice."

To love our children is to discipline them.

The righteous will be satisfied but the wicked are never full.
