Psalm 27:4
One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple.
Luke 10:42
But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
David and Mary - separated by years yet connected because of ONE THING - an earnest desire to dwell in the presence of God. So intense was David's desire that he set his heart to seek after it; to pursue until his mission was accomplished. His longing was not to simply pass by the house of the Lord occasionally. NO! David wanted to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of his life. He desired to behold God's beauty and to ask for instructions.
Mary was blessed because Jesus (David's God - only now He's been made flesh) was a guest in her house! So earnest was her desire that the meal was secondary. While she was supposed to feed the Lord, the "food" that He served was so much better. She sought after her desire much like David by finding where Jesus was, and placing herself at His feet in order to feast on whatever He offered her.
Though they've long since been gone, yet because of the Scriptures, we have the stories of David and Mary; stories that give us the promise even today that if we desire that ONE THING, pursuing it with all our hearts, we can:
- dwell in the house of the Lord forever
- behold the beauty of the Lord
- Enquire of His wisdom within His temple
- And sit at His feet
God bless all of you today!
I have struggled with the Mary and Martha situation, I would have been Martha..but I see Mary's wisdom in your blog. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment, Joy! It's easy to see that both women were right, but I've always leaned toward Mary's side.
